Ballot Question
"Shall the City of Rio Rancho reduce the rate of Municipal Higher Education Facilities Gross Receipts Tax approved by voters on March 4, 2008, currently imposed at the rate of one-fourth (1/4) of one percent (1%) to the rate of one-eighth (1/8) of one percent (1%)?"
Voter Turnout
Of the 56,859 registered voters who could have cast a ballot in this special election, 6,091 or 10.7 percent voted.
What Election Result Means
Because voters did not approve reducing the Municipal Higher Education Facilities Gross Receipts Tax at this special election, there will be no reduction in the current, overall city Gross Receipts Tax rate of 7.4375 percent.
As previously and publicly communicated by District 1 City Councilor Chuck Wilkins, because voters did not approve reducing the Municipal Higher Education Facilities Gross Receipts Tax at this election, the councilor will not sponsor an ordinance seeking Governing Body approval to put into place a new 1/8 of 1 percent Gross Receipts Tax specifically dedicated to public safety (police and fire/emergency medical services) using an available Municipal Hold Harmless Gross Receipts Tax increment.
